São Martinho de Tibães Monastery and Gardens

discover other times

Open the doors of your vision with lovely moments spent in this magical place. The Tibães Monastery is more than just a visit to an old monastery, it is a visit to the past, it is a visit to the present, and a desire to return there in the future. The gardens are a moment of oneness with nature and everything that composes them is part of an itinerary that should be visited. You’ll feel reminiscent of a past that was chaste, but full of opulence, a pride in those who conceived such peculiar surroundings, where visiting a chapel is worth climbing a staircase filled with fountains and mountains, and where a lake is lined with centenarian trees, one of which is the largest of its kind in Portugal.

The Monastery is accompanied by a Rococo style church that surprises us with its 24K gold that pretty much covers most of it. As much as we may like or dislike this style, there is always a "wow" coming from inside, which accompanies us during the entire visit. But, after visiting the church, don’t miss the sacristy where the old bohemian mirrors prevail and a marble adorned floor, surrounded by beautiful cabinets, will leave any visitor mesmerized. Beyond the story of monks who once lived here, you realize that many masters of architecture were a part of the original construction, as well as its current reconstruction. Visit the halls and be surprised by amazing rooms, some purposely left with old walls that lead us back to their original construction and to the art of past masters and craftsmen who created this space with innovative techniques that are still used in architecture today. Observe everything: ceilings, walls, windows, the meager furniture and the chaste atmosphere that still reigns and where every hallway and every room is a surprise. Visit this space unhurriedly!

Besides its history and natural environment, here you’ll also find an inn with 9 bedrooms, a restaurant, and a venue for special events. If you need to take refuge in a monastic environment, this is certainly the right place to do it in Braga.

The monastery can be visited every day and has three guided tours waiting for you. The first one is in the morning at 11 am; the other two in the afternoon, at 3:00 and 4:30 pm. However, you can also visit the Monastery unguided.

The regular ticket, which includes a visit to the monastery and its gardens, has a cost of €4.50. If you just want to enjoy the gardens, the ticket costs €1.50. For seniors and adolescents/young adults, between the ages of 15 and 25, tickets have a 50% discount. The discount goes up to 60% for Youth and Young Citizen Cardholders.

With these excellent conditions, there is no excuse for not discovering this lovely space in Braga.
