On S. João Street you’ll find one of the oldest commerce shops in Braga. The Mercado de São João (Saint John Market) has been selling, for over 100 years, the best cod in Braga.

The shop is easy to find because of the way its door is highlighted: by its famous cod. Inside you’ll find Mr. Manuel Machado cutting cod, while asking a longtime client: "How is your family doing?

The Mercado de São João is much more than a simple grocery store, it is part of the tourist itinerary – because it is one of the best examples of traditional Braga commerce and proof that product quality is more important than innovation or shop elegance.

Here you can buy common grocery store goods, but the focus is on products from the sea, such as Portuguese preserves and the acclaimed cod.
