Nogueira da Silva Museum

Gallery and Garden

If you have not yet visited this space, you are probably unaware that, in addition to the building that houses the museum and gives life to the gallery’s storefront, it also hides one of the most exclusive gardens in the city of Braga.

In 1976, the University of Minho received a major donation that included, besides a house and garden, a significant collection of paintings, sculptures, furniture, jewelry, glass, tapestries, fabrics and porcelain donated by António Nogueira da Silva. A few years later, the museum which perpetuates the name of this entrepreneur and collector, was opened in the house which had also been his.

Over the years, the Museum has diversified its activity: a small team assures the maintenance of the house and garden; promotes the permanent collection among its visitors; endorses an educational service designed to foster a passion and respect for creative beauty in children; exhibits and supports the Art History Photo Library and Library collection; promotes conferences and debates aimed at the understanding of art; welcomes and organizes concerts in various musical expressions; ensures the Gallery’s agenda, a space dedicated to the dissemination of contemporary art, which has divulged the work of numerous national and international artists.

The spirit of the collector remains alive within the Museum and the endowment of the writer Maria Ondina Braga’s estate to the Museum, motivated the creation of a small itinerary that leads the museum’s visitors to the garden, where a center dedicated to the writer was installed.

Do not just pass by the Museum’s door, come in and be delighted by this place that certainly deserves your visit.
